Spelling

Want to try something new for spelling?  Use these activities along with your bookwork to add some extra creativity to your spelling lessons.

We use a set word list for each week.  Students do the book work for each lesson and choose some additional activities to help practice the spelling words.  We use a spelling journal for all of our spelling work, pretests, tests, bookwork and extra activities.

Extra activities to choose from - these can be made into spelling centers or assigned as homework:

ABC Order: Write your words in ABC order.
ZYX Order: Write your words in ABC order - backwards!
Rainbow Words: Write each of your words in three colors.
Pictionary: Write each of your words and draw a picture to illustrate them.
Antonyms: Write an antonym for each word (can use the thesaurus for help if needed.)
Synonyms: Write a synonym for each word (can use the thesaurus for help if needed.)

What's that Mean?:  Use the glossary to write the definition of each word.

Telephone Words: Translate your words into numbers from a telephone keypad.
3-D Words:  Use modelling clay rolled thinly to make your words.
Concentration: Write the word on two index cards and make a concentration game.  (We keep these in an index card box separated by lesson and use them for extra practice during the year.)
Scrabble Speller: Use scrabble tiles to spell your words.  (This one is not included in the spelling journal, we just write about the activity.)
Crossword Clues: Create a crossword puzzle using your words.
